CANADA NEEDS A NATIONAL STRATEGY FOR POLICE RECRUITMENT & RETENTION

Canada’s law enforcement agencies are facing critical challenges in recruiting and retaining officers, which impacts public safety and community well-being. As the rate of police strength hits its lowest point since 1970, it’s evident that urgent action is needed to address these challenges and ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of our law enforcement agencies.

We are calling MPs to support a Federal Strategy for Police Recruitment and Retention. Please add your name in support.

The Challenges

Lowest police strength since 1970, with a nearly 2% decrease from 2022.

Increased overtime leading to burnout and work/life balance issues.

Deterrence of potential recruits by other sectors offering competitive salaries and better work-life balance.

Decline in interest in policing careers among younger generations.

Need for diversity within police forces to reflect the communities they serve.

The Solutions

Targeted Recruitment Campaigns

Improved Retention of Existing Officers

Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives

Countering Negative Media Portrayals

Partnerships and Collaboration
